When Anton Reisenegger and Rodrigo Contreras moved from Chile to the UK (in 2002), it was to be expected that it would have an impact on Criminal's music. Nothing too drastic, but the addition of Zac O'Neil (a.o. Extreme Noise Terror) on drums and Mark Royce (Entwined)'s keys are definitely a step up. The songs are as brutal yet more diverse and will kick your ass even more because of it. Aggressive, in your face, but technical thrash metal, a mix of old school thrash in the vein of gods like Kreator and Sepultura, more modern sounds like Strapping Young Lad and an extra dose of groove. The production is incredible powerful, it all hits you like a ton of bricks.

"Aberration" starts in that old school thrash vein, metaaaaallll!! "Consumed" has some soaring leads but same style for the rest of the song. In "No Return" some really cool riffs alternate with atmospherical keys, all of it topped with Anton's aggressive vocals. Only remark I can make here, is that I feel that the diversity in the songs as well as between the songs, would even be enhanced if the vocals had a bit more variety in them as well. "Deconstruction" has again a killer riff and a chorus that's slower and catchier (love that solo too!), followed by an incredible intense, fast part *headbangs*. "Violent Change" has that Sep feel again, what an awesome bassline in the beginning! Can't be any groovier than that. Anton sings in a pretty monotone way on this one. "Tidal Wave" is an enchanting little intro to the ultra-fast (at least in the beginning) "Downfall", that turns out to be quite a surprising song with all sorts of elements. Fast, quiet, tight, very SYL at times. In "Idol" again a contrast in groove in the music, also very technical, and monotonous vocals. In "Dark Half" a riff a la Machine Head dominates the song. Killer riffing again in "Faceless", with a bit more melody overall, even in the vocals. "Heresy (Bow To None)" is back to fast and technical riffing again, with some groovier parts in the chorus.

So: an overall brutal and aggressive album with "Tidal Wave/Downfall" as my favorite for all the amazing things in it! Check them out on their tour with labelmates Fleshcrawl and Six Feet Under, touring with this CD in their backpocket should really bring Europe to its knees! Bow to none, but on your knees for Criminal!
