The first disappointing album of 2004 is already here. Basically it would not be a challenge to review a Cannibal Corpse album because all of them are f*** heavy, containing brutal death metal. In short, raw powerful music fueled with hate. The formula is the same and so far it seemed we can't get enough from them. But "The Wretched Spawn" turned out to be an average album with lots of common parts from the band's past. Take for instance "Decency Defied", that sounds quite the same as "Sentenced To Burn". Well, if I want to take a time-travel, I would prefer to put on an earlier record and not a new one that sounds so similar to their previous works. But you know what, we don't need to go back in time too far. Just take a look at 2002's "Gore Obsessed". Not their best work but a very strong and killer album (and I don't want to mention "Gallery Of Suicide"). So, "The Wretched Spawn" compared to "Gore Obsessed" is an average, stagnating work by Cannibal Corpse. The songs are following each other without any notice, sounding like a big mass of noise and Corpsegrinder's vocals are also monotonous. Of corpse they are still professional in what they make. The well placed changes and the tempos are keeping you awake while listening to the album and smash you into pieces - but that is a requirement for every death metal album. The best songs are "Festering In The Crypt", "Rotted Body Landslide" - the two slowed down, low tuned tracks that are really heavy pouding and crushing. "Bent Backwards And Broken" and "They Deserve To Die" are also worth mentioning for the great solos of Pat and Jack.

To summarize this album we can say that it holds no surprise and it is just another full-length album in the Cannibal Corpse discography. Of corpse the band's fans will like it but it is not an album that is worth talking a lot about. (*But why did we have to wait 2 years for something like this?*)
