When I first heard "Cataract is like Slayer meets Hatebreed" it made me laugh. Last year I saw Slayer and Hatebreed on the Jägermeister tour with Slayer headlining and I can tell you Hatebreed sounded weak striving. Actually every band, who are more on the hardcore side, are compared to Slayer like that. So, I was just standing there and wondered what the hype about them was for. Slayer kicks ass while Hatebreed is just watching from the backseat.

What I really like about the wide metal scene we have nowadays is that we have the opportunity to get to know bands from the so called "non-metal" countries. Switzerland was, until now, mostly famous for Celtic Frost and Samael, but now we have Cataract here, a f***ing great metalcore band from the country of banks and chocolate.

"With Triumph Comes Loss" is their third album and due to the fact they are signed to Metal Blade they have got a good chance to become known everywhere around the world. They deserve it. Though their Slayer influence is very clear in their music (the opening riffs of "As We Speak" were strongly influenced by "Raining Blood") they found their own path. The music is strongly influenced by Slayer-ish thrash and At The Gates styled death metal with the dry aggression of hardcore and this mixture is much more than just great. Strong, pounding, tight music with chilling thrash riffs and powerful drumming, with typical shouting, hardcore-ish vocals. The slower parts give a push to its heaviness, never letting down the energy and the strength. And in the end we see that everybody, from the ones who like old-school thrash to the modern thrashers and metalcore lovers, will like this album.
Tue Madsen did a great job again. Strong production for a strong album.

The first edition of "With Triump Comes Loss" comes with a 50 minutes long DVD, containing live material, studio report and photo gallery. Not a must...but strongly recommended.
