Ah, more melodic death metal from Finland. Do not worry though, they are not just another band blindly copying Children Of Bodom, although comparison to CoB on some level is inevitable.

This is Cadacross' second full length album and their line-up went through some radical changes after the debut album as the band founder and guitarist Georg Laakso is the only remaining member from the days of "So Pale Is The Light" debut. Anyhow, the band now features no more than seven full time members. Laakso himself is the main songwriter, Antti Ventola adds some epic and symphonic touches with his keyboard performance and Sami Aarnio's somewhat aggressive growling lead vocals are accompanied by Nina Laakso's female counterpart which creates a nice contrast with Aarnio's performance, although she stays mainly in the background. In addition to the seven full time Cadacrossers they have three additional musicians, from which Riku Ylitalo and his accordion are probably the most noticeable.

Cadacross' approach has quite a few different sides to it. They combine influences from traditional heavy metal, melodic death metal, epic synth-oriented metal and also some viking metal. Some bands that may pop up in comparison are Children Of Bodom, Ensiferum, Bal-Sagoth and in a way also Finntroll. The song material is quite even which in this case would mean that there are no low-points on the album and instead some high peaks are present regardless of the occasional predictability. The guitar playing and the solos have some obvious classical influences to them and some nice riffs do stand out. Also some clean vocals and choirs have been blended to the mix. The pace varies from the expected fast to some slower, both beautiful and really heavy, parts which bring nice changes to the obvious full-speed-ahead bombardment. The synth arrangements do indeed make the overall atmosphere much more pompous and symphonic, from where the comparison to Bal-Sagoth comes to mind. Occasionally something also makes me think of Norway. Hmmmh...?

With all these elements combined in their music, the production of the album would deserve to be absolutely magnificent. It is, to say the least, good enough as it is, which probably makes the final result sound more raw and aggressive than it would with a really polished production. But now, according to my amateur ears, it feels like there's something missing. All in all, this is a nice package of melodic, slightly symphonic combination of heavy and Gothenburg-flavored death metal which I can easily recommend to fans of the aforementioned bands.
