Neurosis and Mastodon walk into a bar. They drink. They read existential literature. They go over to visit the boys in Converge. An orgy ensues. While everyone basks in the wet spot something beautiful is created from the sloppy fluid interchange of complete insanity taking an oddly human form. Buried Inside form in the province of Ontario. They go to a bar. They drink. Am I the only one noticing a pattern here? I have absolutely no idea what kind of drugs these guys are on, I have no clue where they get their books or where they came up with the idea to base an album on the subject of time and its eventual systematic destruction of our world. Plainly put, I don't care, either. Time is the enemy, it would seem, within the world of Buried Inside's on take on grindy doom sludge metal, and they exploit its weakness at every possible instant. Whether blurring by amidst a furious blast or allowed to breathe heavily and intake the sweetest exhaust from cars stuffed onto a freeway like sardines in a can, Buried Inside take you on a journey like no other. The dynamics cease to be of light and dark, more of life and of death. Each tortured scream and subdued melancholy chord is like an ache deep inside the bones of all mankind. It is useless to describe this album with song titles, as the whole prospect leaves me tired in the same way that Fates Warning's "Pleasant Shade of Grey" did back in 1997. The quote in the booklet sums it best, "A curse on its weights, a curse on its wheels." Buried Inside have thusly spit in the face of extreme metal convention, throwing a rusted wrench into the massive wheel that spins out the same drivel year after year, and created something completely new and different from the remnants of the past, keeping one eye inward and the other staring down the long highway of the unknown. It is said that necessity is the mother of invention. Buried Inside have invented themselves and a new genre. Now, what to call the damn thing....
