I didn't expect the new disc to be much different from "Ambiguity", but still "Metus Mortis" surprised even me, the die-hard fan. First of all I was taken by the fact it's much thrashier again, secondly because the songwriting has gotten even better and the whole disc is more of a unity than the previous one was. On the other hand, one might miss "Ambiguity"'s diversity, but if you get your hands on the digipack, you'll also get a lower paced and more epic bonus-song, "Face Down" - in the vein of "Ambiguity"'s "Beyond My Destiny", plus a steaming hidden track!

But let's concentrate on the regular songs. The title song is the intro which is way different than the unbeatable "Crush Depth"-intro on "Ambiguity", but very atmospheric and building up nicely to the drum-intro of "Blind Suffering", immediately showing what this album is about: energy! There is not one filler, which makes it hard for me to point out any favorites, but I'll try: "Shadowland" & "Checkmate in Red" (simply great songs), "Weakness Sows Its Seed" & "Under Lights" (lower paced but very driven; awesome vocals) and "Cycles" (headbaaang!). In general the songs exist of killer riffs and massive double bass for the aggression, twin-leads and killer refrains for the melody, many interesting details for longlasting fun and a great production by Achim Köhler.

Andy B. Franck's amazing voice again brings the band to the next level. More than ever before he sings melodic as well as aggressive, growls, uses almost-spoken parts ("Weakness Sows Its Seed" or Mustaine-like in "Behind") and I even hear some vocal Vio-lence influences in "Cycles". The main topic in the lyrics is human fear ("Metus Mortis" means mortal fear). Musically some songs are a kind of follow up on an "Ambiguity" song, like "Arena" & "Meet Me In The Dark", "Perception Of Life" & <"Strength Of Will" and most of all "Maharaja Palace" & "Checkmate In Red" (incl. the oriental theme).

It is an album that will fullfill all your metal needs and will continue to do so after 20 or 50 or 500 spins!
